Scholarship Qualification Criteria, Requirements, and Guidelines

The Hellenic University Club Undergraduate Scholarship Awards (“Awards”) are offered in recognition and honor of Greek American students who have exemplified high scholastic achievement.

The Hellenic University Club of New York (“Organization”) will offer a total of four (4) Awards of $1,500 each based on academic achievement and financial need.

All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements and submit a complete Hellenic University Club Undergraduate Scholarship Application (“Application”) to the Organization.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • High school students that will graduate in Spring 2018 from state certified high schools, or equivalents, and will enroll at accredited universities/colleges in the U.S. in Fall 2018 as full-time students pursuing bachelor’s degrees
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents and living in the tri-state New York area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut)
  • Applicants must be of Hellenic descent – at least one great grandparent with Hellenic roots
  • Applicants must have a cumulative average of at least 90% (or 3.5 GPA) or be in the top 10% of their class
  • Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1800/2400 (old SAT) or 1300/1600 (new SAT) and/or minimum ACT score of 27/36
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need

 

ELIGIBILITY LIMITATIONS

  • High school students with projected graduation dates in 2019 or later are not eligible to apply
  • The Awards are not available to home school study applicants
  • Governors, officers, committee members and employees of the Organization and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for an Award

 

FINANCIAL CRITERIA

Applicants must provide the Organization with their 2018-2019 FASFA Student Aid Report (“SAR”). A scanned PDF file of the SAR Report should be emailed to scholarship@hucny.com with the applicant’s completed application. Please redact all social security numbers. Additional financial information may be requested, if needed. All financial information remains confidential.

 

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Two letters of recommendation are required for all applicants – one (1) academic and one (1) personal reference letter.

 

ACADEMIC

  • Letters must be prepared by individuals who are in the position to provide an informed evaluation of your academic performance including teachers, guidance counselors, academic advisors, or principals.
  • Recommenders must prepare a recommendation letter that specifically addresses your scholastic performance.
  • Recommendation letter must be submitted on official school stationery in direct reference to the Hellenic University Club of NY.
  • Letter must be scanned and emailed as a PDF file by the recommender directly to the Organization (scholarship@hucny.com).
  • Letter must be emailed no later than the application deadline.
  • Please DO NOT send more than one (1) Academic Recommendation Letter.
  • Recommendation letters prepared by individuals other than guidance counselors, academic advisors, principals, etc., will not be accepted and the application will be disqualified.

 

PERSONAL LETTER OF REFERENCE

  • Personal reference letters must be prepared by individuals who are in the position to provide an informed evaluation of your leadership skills/abilities. Individuals such as priests, current or previous employers, or directors of community organizations would be appropriate.
  • Recommendation letter must be submitted on official stationery in direct reference to the Hellenic University Club of NY.
  • Letter must be scanned and emailed as a PDF file by the recommender directly to the Organization (scholarship@hucny.com).
  • Please DO NOT send more than one (1) Personal Reference Letter.
  • Letter must be emailed no later than the deadline.
  • Personal references prepared by relatives will not be accepted and the application will be disqualified.

 

TRANSCRIPTS

All official high school transcripts must be electronically sent directly to the Organization (scholarship@hucny.com) from the issuing academic institutions no later than the deadline.

 

STANDARDIZED EXAM SCORES

Official SAT and/or ACT Score Reports must be ordered through the appropriate testing agencies. The Organization’s SAT College/Scholarship Code is 7282; the ACT College Code is 7911. Score reports must be sent no later than the deadline.

 

ESSAY

The essay topic is found in section D of the application. The essay must be emailed with your completed application in PDF format.

 

SUBMISSION AND APPLICATION DEADLINE

2018 Undergraduate Scholarship Applications and supporting documentation being emailed to the Organization (scholarship@hucny.com) must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm EST on April 15, 2018.

Documents emailed to the Organization from individuals or institutions in support of Applicant, should insert Applicant’s name in the subject line of the email message.

Failure to have the application and required documentation by deadline will disqualify the application.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR AWARD RECIPIENTS (POST-DEADLINE)

Proof of Registration

Scholarship recipients must submit a letter of matriculation from the college/university they will be attending in Fall 2018 no later than September 30, 2018.

Short Biography

Submit a short biography of up to 75 words in paragraph format. Biographies must be sent via email to scholarship@hucny.com in Microsoft Word format. Include your major, career goals, special interests, achievements, and any scholastic honors or distinctions received. This text will be used as part of Organization’s press release, website posting and Spring Gala Award Dinner printed materials.

Photograph

Send a high-resolution, color formal portrait photograph via email to scholarship@hucny.com in jpeg format. Please do not email photographs with other persons in the picture. This photograph will be used in our Spring Gala’s printed materials, press releases and on our website.

 

AWARDS DISTRIBUTION

Awards will be given to the recipients in July 2018 time frame.

The awards are granted regardless of other scholarships the applicant may have received from other institutions.

 

AUTHORIZED USE OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

The monetary award received by the recipient shall be used solely to cover the cost of tuition fees, textbooks, or laptop for academic use.

The Hellenic University Club of NY may demand return of the scholarship award in the event the funds are not used for educational purposes or the student discontinues his/her undergraduate studies at an accredited university in the U.S.
